Commissioning a Piece as a Gift: How to Get It Right

You cannot surprise someone with a piece of furniture built to their body. That is the honest answer, and it is worth saying before anything else, because it is the thing that goes wrong.

A commissioned piece is sized to the people using it: a bench is set to two heights, a cross to a ceiling and an arm span, stocks to a neck and a pair of wrists. Guess those and you have spent several hundred pounds on something that does not fit. Ask for them and the surprise is already gone.

So the good version of this gift is a different shape.

Gift the commission, not the finished piece

What works is giving the decision, funded and started, rather than a sealed box.

In practice that means paying the deposit and presenting the drawing. Our process produces a dimensioned sketch and a fixed price within 5 working days of the brief, at no cost. You can commission to a general specification, receive the sketch, and give that: a real drawing of a real piece, with the money already committed and the measurements still to be set together.

That keeps the surprise intact, keeps the fit correct, and has the considerable side benefit that the person receiving it gets a say in something they will be strapped to.

Timing, which catches people out

Lead time is 6–9 weeks from the point the drawing is approved, and the design stage comes before that. For a dated occasion, work backwards generously.

Three months before the date is comfortable. Six weeks is not, and no workshop that tells you otherwise is being straight with you.

Getting measurements without spoiling it

If you are set on a surprise, some figures can be had without asking directly.

• Room dimensions you can measure yourself, and ceiling height is the constraint that most often changes a design.
• Height is usually known or easily checked against a door frame.
• Neck and wrist circumference cannot be guessed to any useful accuracy. If the piece needs them, it needs them.

A workable compromise is to commission the frame to room dimensions and leave the fitted parts, the apertures, the cuff positions, the pad heights, to be set after it is given. We build to that sequence fairly often.

Discretion at both ends

Two things matter if the gift is going to a shared household.

Delivery arrives in a plain wooden crate with a neutral return label, and there is a crated option where nobody enters the property at all. And the card statement shows a neutral descriptor rather than anything that identifies the category. If the recipient shares finances with someone who should not see it, that second point is the one people forget.

One legal note worth knowing

Goods made to a consumer's specification are exempt from the usual 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. That is standard across every bespoke maker in the UK and it is not a catch, but it does mean the drawing is the moment to be certain rather than polite. Two rounds of amends are included for exactly that reason. Use them.

Q: Can I surprise someone with commissioned bondage furniture?

Not completely, if the piece is sized to their body, and most are. The version that works is gifting the commission itself: pay the deposit, present the drawing, and set the measurements together afterwards.

Q: How far in advance should I order for an anniversary?
