How do you clean a glass dildo?

Glass is non-porous and fully sterilisable. Wash with warm water and fragrance-free soap after every use; for deeper cleaning, boil for 3 minutes or run through a top-rack dishwasher (no detergent). Always inspect for chips or cracks before use.

Borosilicate glass dildos are among the easiest sex toys to keep — they're non-porous, chemically inert, and sterilisable to surgical standard.

Everyday cleaning

After every use:

  1. Warm water — not hot enough to thermal-shock the glass. Lukewarm is correct.
  2. Fragrance-free antibacterial soap — Carex Original, Cussons Soft & Gentle, or any unscented liquid soap. Avoid scented soaps (residue lingers).
  3. Thirty seconds of attention — front, back, base, any textured surfaces.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Pat dry on a clean cloth or paper towel.
  6. Air-dry for a few minutes before storing.

Deeper sterilisation

For thorough sterilisation between partners, between body parts, or after long-term storage:

Boiling

Submerge in boiling water for 3 minutes. Use a saucepan reserved for the purpose. Lift out with tongs; allow to air-cool on a clean surface.

Important: add the glass to room-temperature water and bring to a boil together, rather than placing cold glass into already-boiling water. Sudden temperature change can shock-fracture borosilicate glass, even though it's designed for thermal resistance.

Dishwasher

Top-rack dishwasher, normal cycle, no detergent (residue is hard to remove from textured surfaces), no heated drying. Effective for batch-cleaning multiple glass pieces; mind the rack position so the glass doesn't touch the heating element directly.

70% isopropyl alcohol

Wipe with 70% IPA on a microfibre cloth, then rinse with water afterwards. Useful when boiling or dishwashing isn't practical.

The inspection check

Before every use, inspect the glass:

  • Look for visible chips or cracks — particularly at the base, the head, and any textured areas. A chip is the most-common point of failure under load.
  • Feel along the surface with a fingertip — any rough spots, cracks, or surface damage means the piece should be retired.
  • Hold up to light — internal fractures are sometimes visible as cloudy lines inside the glass.

Cracked or chipped glass can fracture under use. The body of a quality borosilicate dildo can withstand significant force, but any pre-existing damage compromises that strength.

Storage

  • Original padded pouch or a foam-lined drawer space — protect from impacts during storage.
  • Don't store in direct contact with other hard objects — glass-against-metal contact in storage can chip the surface.
  • Room temperature — glass tolerates temperature extremes but rapid changes can shock-fracture. Don't store next to a radiator and use immediately afterward; let it equilibrate.

What destroys glass dildos

  • Impact — dropping on tile or hard floors. The single most-common cause of failure.
  • Rapid temperature change — cold-to-boiling or hot-to-cold without gradual transition.
  • Surface scratches from abrasive cleaners — never use scouring pads, bleach, or harsh chemicals.

Lifespan

A quality borosilicate glass dildo, properly stored and inspected, lasts indefinitely. There's no material degradation; only structural damage. Many users own glass pieces for 10+ years without any decline in performance.

Lubricant compatibility

Glass works with every lubricant type — water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based all leave no residue and don't react with the glass surface. This makes glass the most-flexible material for lubricant choice.
