Silicone-based lubricant is fully compatible with both latex and polyisoprene condoms. The molecules in silicone lubricant don't interact with latex; condom integrity and burst strength are unaffected. The same is true for non-latex (polyisoprene) and polyurethane condoms.
This makes silicone lube one of the only lubricant types that pairs safely with every condom material available in the UK.
What silicone lube isn't compatible with
The major incompatibility is silicone toys. Silicone lubricant on a silicone toy causes a chemical bond between the lubricant and the toy's surface, which gradually degrades the toy — the surface becomes tacky, swells, and loses integrity over weeks of use. The reaction is irreversible.
For couples using silicone toys with condoms, the practical solutions:
- Use water-based lubricant with the silicone toy; the condom is happy either way.
- Use silicone lubricant only with non-silicone toys (glass, stainless steel, ABS plastic).
- Use a hybrid lubricant (mostly water with a small percentage of silicone) — safe with silicone toys at low silicone content; check the label.
What about oil-based lubricants?
Oil-based lubricants destroy latex on contact — coconut oil, mineral oil, Vaseline, kitchen oils. Avoid with any latex barrier (condoms, gloves, dental dams). They're also incompatible with polyisoprene condoms. Oil-based products are skin-only.
Why silicone lube is often the right choice
- Lasts 30–60 minutes per application versus 5–15 for water-based.
- Doesn't absorb into skin or condom material.
- Works in water — shower or bath sessions don't wash it off.
- pH-neutral by definition (no water content means no pH).
- WHO guidance on rectal lubricants supports silicone formulas for their iso-osmolal profile — they don't draw water out of body tissue the way some water-based formulas can.
The cheapest right answer
A quality silicone lubricant (Pjur Original, Sliquid Silver, ID Millennium) costs £15–£25 for a 100ml bottle that lasts months. Buy one bottle of silicone for partner use without silicone toys; one bottle of water-based for solo use with silicone toys; two-bottle solution covers everything.
