The cause of the smell tells you what's actually happening to the toy.
Smell on a new toy
If a brand-new toy has a noticeable smell out of the box:
- Plastic / chemical smell that doesn't fade in weeks — almost certainly TPE, TPR, or jelly rubber. These porous materials off-gas plasticisers continuously. The smell often signals that you're absorbing some of those plasticisers during use, which is why these materials are regulatorily restricted in many contexts.
- Faint plastic smell that fades within a few days — likely ABS plastic handle on a quality toy; not concerning.
- No smell out of the box — characteristic of genuine platinum-cure silicone, borosilicate glass, and 316L stainless steel.
If you bought a "silicone" toy that smells chemical, it's almost certainly TPE with marketing labelling. See what's the difference between silicone and TPE.
Smell on an older toy
If a toy that previously didn't smell now does:
- Musty / mouldy smell — trapped moisture, often in the charge port or in storage. Clean thoroughly; air-dry completely; check storage conditions.
- Sour / fermented smell — bacterial growth, usually on porous materials. Often unrecoverable; the toy may need to be retired.
- Greasy / oily smell with visible surface sweating — plasticiser migration on TPE / jelly. The material is degrading; retire it.
- Slight body smell on leather or rope — normal absorption of body scent. Conditioner / time / fresh air will manage it.
What to do
- Wash the toy thoroughly with fragrance-free antibacterial soap and warm water.
- Sterilise if material allows — boil non-motorised silicone for 3 minutes, or 70% IPA wipe-down for motorised silicone.
- Air-dry completely — 24 hours at room temperature, not in a sealed bag.
- Re-smell. If the smell persists after thorough cleaning, the material itself is the issue — retire the toy.
Prevention
- Buy non-porous materials. Platinum-cure silicone, borosilicate glass, 316L stainless steel.
- Air-dry fully before storing. Trapped moisture is the most-common cause of musty smell.
- Don't store in plastic bags. Breathable cotton pouches let moisture evaporate.
- Wash properly after every use. Bacterial growth requires food (body fluids) and moisture; remove both promptly.
