Frequently asked
- How do I measure my erect girth correctly?
- When fully erect, wrap a soft fabric tape (or a strip of paper, then measure against a ruler) around the thickest part of the shaft, usually mid-shaft. Pull the tape snug but not tight. Record the circumference in centimetres. The average UK adult erect girth is roughly 11.7 cm (Veale et al. 2015, n=15,521).
- What is nominal width and why does it matter?
- Nominal width is the width of a condom laid flat, which equals half its inside circumference. To match yourself: divide your erect girth in millimetres by two. If your girth is 12 cm (120 mm), your ideal nominal width is 60 mm. A correctly-fitting condom feels snug but not constrictive, with about 1 cm of room at the tip for the reservoir.
- What happens if a condom is too tight or too loose?
- Too tight increases breakage risk and discomfort, the latex is stretched past its design tolerance. Too loose increases slippage risk, which defeats the contraceptive and STI-prevention purpose. Aim for nominal width within ±2 mm of your calculated ideal; many manufacturers list this on the box in fine print.
- I have a latex allergy. What are my options?
- Polyisoprene (Mates Skyn, Durex Real Feel) and polyurethane (Durex Avanti) are the two non-latex condom materials available in the UK. Polyisoprene feels closer to latex; polyurethane is thinner, transmits heat better, and is the only condom material that tolerates oil-based lubricants. Lambskin is also non-latex but does not protect against STIs.
- Are larger condoms always better if I am between sizes?
- When between sizes, size up rather than down. Slippage from a slightly-loose condom is preventable with correct application; breakage from a too-tight condom rarely is. Test brands until you find the one that stays put without pinching.
- Do thinner condoms break more easily?
- No. WHO standards require all condoms sold in the UK to pass the same air-burst and tensile tests regardless of wall thickness. "Thin" or "ultra-thin" refers to latex wall thickness only (typically 40-60 microns vs 70-80 for "extra safe"); the breakage rate is statistically identical when used correctly.
