A kneeling bench in solid oak. Low and long on a base board, with an angled chest wedge at the high end and a flat knee pad on the base at the low end. Roughly 800mm long by 600mm tall. It holds a kneeling position with the torso supported along its length, which is what lets it be used for any length of time rather than for as long as the knees last.

The drop is the design

The distance from knee pad to chest wedge is the measurement that decides whether this piece works. Too steep and the neck takes the weight. Too shallow and the back arches. We set it from the user's own kneeling height rather than from a standard, so send that figure with your enquiry and the wedge is cut to it.

Not a prie-dieu

The two get confused, and they are different pieces. A prie-dieu is upright: you kneel at it and rest your forearms on a ledge at chest height. This is a bench. It sits on the floor, it carries the whole torso on the wedge, and it holds a position rather than a posture.

What timber is Oak Kneeling Bench made from?

Solid English oak as quoted, finished in hard-wax oil. Oak sits at roughly 1,120 lbf on the Janka hardness scale, against about 540 lbf for the Scots pine most sub-£400 "wooden" bondage furniture is built from, which is why pine dents under a fingernail and oak does not. European ash (~1,320 lbf) is harder still and cheaper; black walnut (~1,010 lbf) is softer and dearer, and you choose it for the colour. How much weight will Oak Kneeling Bench take?

We do not publish a load rating, because we have not had one independently tested and we are not willing to print a number we cannot stand behind. What we will tell you is the construction: solid hardwood, mortise-and-tenon jointed rather than bolted through end grain, with steel hardware bearing on timber thick enough not to crush. How do I look after oiled oak?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it. Hard-wax oil sits in the timber rather than on top of it, so unlike a lacquer it does not chip or peel, and a scuff is repaired by re-oiling the patch rather than refinishing the whole piece. Re-oil about once a year under regular use, more often on surfaces that take body contact. Avoid silicone-based furniture polish; it interferes with re-oiling later.
