The proportion is the design

A cross is built roughly two to one, tall to wide, with the two arms lap-jointed at 55 degrees. Get that angle wrong and the piece either will not take a spread-eagle without straining the shoulders, or it takes up half the room. The lower arms carry the load straight into a plinth foot, so there is no separate frame in front of the X and nothing to catch a shin on.

Why the footrest

Without one, a person on a cross hangs from the wrist cuffs and the session is limited by how long the shoulders last rather than by anything either of you decided. A footrest takes the weight, and the piece stops being a stamina test. It is the single most useful thing you can add to a cross and it is included here.

Solid English oak as quoted, finished in hard-wax oil. Oak sits at roughly 1,120 lbf on the Janka hardness scale, against about 540 lbf for the Scots pine most sub-£400 "wooden" bondage furniture is built from, which is why pine dents under a fingernail and oak does not.
