A standing pillory in solid oak: two uprights, a hinged board with a neck aperture and a wrist aperture either side, and a lower rail for ankle restraint. It holds a person bent at the waist with the arms and head fixed, which is the position the piece exists for.

The part that matters

The apertures are cut to the person who will be using it. A stock board cut to a generic template either pinches or leaves slack, and both of those end a session early. Send us a neck circumference and a wrist circumference and the openings are cut to those figures with clearance for comfort over a long period.

What timber is Oak Stocks & Pillory made from?

Solid English oak as quoted, finished in hard-wax oil. Oak sits at roughly 1,120 lbf on the Janka hardness scale, against about 540 lbf for the Scots pine most sub-£400 "wooden" bondage furniture is built from, which is why pine dents under a fingernail and oak does not. European ash (~1,320 lbf) is harder still and cheaper; black walnut (~1,010 lbf) is softer and dearer, and you choose it for the colour. How much weight will Oak Stocks & Pillory take?

We do not publish a load rating, because we have not had one independently tested and we are not willing to print a number we cannot stand behind. What we will tell you is the construction: solid hardwood, mortise-and-tenon jointed rather than bolted through end grain, with steel hardware bearing on timber thick enough not to crush. If a stated load figure is a requirement for you, say so on the enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether we can get the piece tested.

How do I look after oiled oak?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it. Hard-wax oil sits in the timber rather than on top of it, so unlike a lacquer it does not chip or peel, and a scuff is repaired by re-oiling the patch rather than refinishing the whole piece. Re-oil about once a year under regular use, more often on surfaces that take body contact. Avoid silicone-based furniture polish; it interferes with re-oiling later.

How are the apertures sized?

How tall is Oak Stocks & Pillory?

The board sits about 1150mm off the floor on a 1400mm frame as quoted, which is where it lands for someone standing and bent forward at the waist. It is set to the user rather than to a standard, so send a height with the enquiry.

Why is the board shaped rather than a plain plank?

Because the aperture removes material exactly where the board is working hardest. The timber swells around each hole and waists between them, so the board keeps its section at the weakest point. A plain plank with three holes bored through it is the same piece with the strength cut out of it.

Can it be locked?

Yes. The board hinges one side and closes on a hasp the other, and the hasp takes a padlock. Ask for leather-lined apertures at the same time if the piece is going to be used for any length of time; bare timber against the throat is fine for minutes and tiring for longer.
