A turned oak spreader bar with a forged eyebolt and a welded cuff ring at each end. Made to the length you ask for, which is the whole point of having one made rather than buying a fixed size.

Off-the-shelf spreaders come in one or two lengths and are sized for an average nobody actually is. A bar that is too long strains the hips; too short and it does nothing. Measure the span you want between the ankles, or between the wrists, and that is the length we turn.

What timber is Oak Spreader Bar made from?

Solid English oak as quoted, finished in hard-wax oil. Oak sits at roughly 1,120 lbf on the Janka hardness scale, against about 540 lbf for the Scots pine most sub-£400 "wooden" bondage furniture is built from, which is why pine dents under a fingernail and oak does not. European ash (~1,320 lbf) is harder still and cheaper; black walnut (~1,010 lbf) is softer and dearer, and you choose it for the colour. How much weight will Oak Spreader Bar take?

We do not publish a load rating, because we have not had one independently tested and we are not willing to print a number we cannot stand behind. What we will tell you is the construction: solid hardwood, mortise-and-tenon jointed rather than bolted through end grain, with steel hardware bearing on timber thick enough not to crush. If a stated load figure is a requirement for you, say so on the enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether we can get the piece tested.

How do I look after oiled oak?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it. Hard-wax oil sits in the timber rather than on top of it, so unlike a lacquer it does not chip or peel, and a scuff is repaired by re-oiling the patch rather than refinishing the whole piece. Re-oil about once a year under regular use, more often on surfaces that take body contact. Avoid silicone-based furniture polish; it interferes with re-oiling later.

How is the hardware fixed into Oak Spreader Bar?

A steel eyebolt threaded into the end grain with a welded ring below it, at each end. End grain is the weakest direction in any timber, so the bar is turned with a collar at each end to keep section where the thread bites.

Does it come with cuffs?

Leather cuffs are a matching extra rather than included, so you can pair the bar with cuffs you already own. If you want them made to match, ask on the enquiry and they are cut from the same hide and finished to the same colour.

Can I order a matching pair?

Yes, and a graduated set is a common ask: a shorter wrist bar and a longer ankle bar turned from the same billet so the grain and colour match. Priced per bar.
