A queening stool in solid oak, also called a smotherbox. Two solid side panels, a padded seat on top with a shaped aperture, an open end for the head, and a padded head rest on the base inside. 480mm wide, 450mm deep, 430mm tall.

Height is the only figure that matters

A queening stool has one job, and it fails at it if the height is wrong. Too tall and the person underneath cannot reach comfortably; too short and their head is pinned against the base. 430mm is the figure that suits most people, and it is the one quoted here, but it is set to the pair of you if you send both heights with the enquiry.

It is a box, not a chair

Most of what gets sold as a queening chair is an upholstered frame with a hole in it, and the cost sits in the upholstery rather than the structure. This is a piece of casework: solid oak panels, jointed, with the padding on top of a timber seat rather than instead of one. It will take an adult's full weight indefinitely and it does not rack.

European ash (~1,320 lbf) is harder still and cheaper; black walnut (~1,010 lbf) is softer and dearer, and you choose it for the colour. How much weight will Oak Queening Stool take?

We do not publish a load rating, because we have not had one independently tested and we are not willing to print a number we cannot stand behind. What we will tell you is the construction: solid hardwood, mortise-and-tenon jointed rather than bolted through end grain, with steel hardware bearing on timber thick enough not to crush. How do I look after oiled oak?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it. Hard-wax oil sits in the timber rather than on top of it, so unlike a lacquer it does not chip or peel, and a scuff is repaired by re-oiling the patch rather than refinishing the whole piece. Re-oil about once a year under regular use, more often on surfaces that take body contact. Avoid silicone-based furniture polish; it interferes with re-oiling later.
