A spanking bench in solid oak: two A-frames under a long padded top, with an arm pad at one end and a lower knee pad at the other, and an anchor point at the foot of each leg.

Why the A-frame

The splay is what stops it tipping when weight goes onto one end, and it is the reason this shape has outlived every other bench design. A flat top on four straight legs is a sawhorse; it racks sideways and it walks across the floor. The trestle does neither.

Height is the whole thing

A bench is at the right height when the person over it is level and the person using it is not stooping. That is two measurements, not one, and it is why benches bought off a shelf so often end up in a cupboard. Send us both heights and the bench is built to them.

Quoted in solid English oak, hard-wax oiled, which is the house specification. Oak sits at roughly 1,120 lbf on the Janka hardness scale against about 540 lbf for the Scots pine most sub-£400 "wooden" bondage furniture is built from, which is the difference between a piece that marks and one that dents under a fingernail. European ash (~1,320 lbf) is harder still and cheaper; black walnut (~1,010 lbf) is softer and dearer, and you choose it for the colour. Each changes the price, so say which you want and the quote comes back with the figure on it.

Delivery

Discreet crated delivery across UK mainland is included. The piece arrives in a plain wooden crate, addressed to you, and nobody comes into the property. Two-person in-room delivery and assembly is available instead if you would rather.

How much weight will Oak Spanking Bench take?

We do not publish a load rating, because we have not had one independently tested and we are not willing to print a number we cannot stand behind. What we will tell you is the construction: solid hardwood, mortise-and-tenon jointed rather than bolted through end grain, with steel hardware bearing on timber thick enough not to crush. If a stated load figure is a requirement for you, say so on the enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether we can get the piece tested.

How do I look after oiled oak?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it. Hard-wax oil sits in the timber rather than on top of it, so unlike a lacquer it does not chip or peel, and a scuff is repaired by re-oiling the patch rather than refinishing the whole piece. Re-oil about once a year under regular use, more often on surfaces that take body contact. Avoid silicone-based furniture polish; it interferes with re-oiling later.
